SARAL

Transform exam assessment with our state-of-the-art technology, seamlessly processing handwritten characters, digits, and OMR sheets

How the Saral App Transformed the Assessment Landscape in Uttar Pradesh?

The development of the Saral App emerged as a response to the challenges faced by the state in efficiently collecting student-level data in a digitized format. Recognizing the need for a swift and comprehensive approach to assess student performance at scale, the Saral App was conceptualized to transcend the limitations of sample-based assessments. Its primary objective was to cover the entire state, ensuring the collection of student-level learning data that could be promptly analyzed and utilized to tailor targeted interventions. At its core, the Saral App revolutionizes the traditional method of data collection by replacing outdated answer sheets with OMR-based sheets. This innovation empowers teachers to seamlessly scan answer sheets using the Saral App, facilitating the instantaneous digitization of data. As a result, the state receives digitized data on the same day of scanning, significantly enhancing efficiency and reducing processing time. Central to its effectiveness is the incorporation of AI technology within the Saral App. This integration not only expedites the data collection process but also streamlines it, enabling multiple iterations of assessments to be conducted throughout the year with ease. By harnessing the power of AI, the Saral App offers a user-friendly platform that simplifies the complexities of data analysis and interpretation. Moreover, the implementation of Saral Assessments necessitates a one-time investment of effort in planning, operations, and garnering support from stakeholders across the hierarchy. However, this investment is akin to that required for any large-scale assessment initiative, underscoring the scalability and sustainability of the Saral App as a transformative solution for educational evaluation. In essence, the Saral App epitomizes innovation in education, offering a seamless and efficient method of assessing student performance at scale. Its AI-powered features not only expedite data collection but also empower educators with invaluable insights to drive targeted interventions and improve learning outcomes across the state.

The Tale of Transformation

In December 2022, a pioneering initiative was launched, marking the inaugural assessment of around 14 million students in grades 1 to 8 nationwide using the innovative Saral App. This approach aimed to evaluate students against 47 learning outcomes across three subjects: Hindi, Mathematics, and Science. Leading this effort, centralized model question papers were meticulously crafted by SCERT, serving as a benchmark for other districts to follow suit in their decentralized question paper preparations. To ensure the smooth execution of this historic assessment, a comprehensive training program was implemented for teachers, ARPs, and other ground staff. Utilizing modern communication channels like YouTube Live sessions and regular communications, including instructional videos, the workforce was equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively navigate the Saral App. Additionally, the State’s NIPUN Bharat Monitoring Centre (NBMC) played a crucial role as an issue resolution center, swiftly addressing challenges encountered on the ground. Despite meticulous planning and concerted efforts, the journey was riddled with challenges. Chief among these obstacles was the significant data loss and the unreliability of captured data. This setback, compounded by the proliferation of decentralized question papers, posed a formidable barrier to evaluating results on the backend, hindering the achievement of intended outcomes in this round of assessments. Undeterred by adversity, the State and its implementation partners remained steadfast in their commitment to success. Undertaking a thorough review of the entire process, problem nodes were meticulously identified through first-principle problem-solving methodologies. Subsequently, a hypotheses-driven issue diagnosis plan and Saral App user testing plan were developed to validate and address the identified challenges. Through extensive root cause analysis, additional hurdles came to light, offering further insight into the complexities of executing large-scale assessments. Armed with newfound knowledge and a steadfast determination to overcome obstacles, the State and its partners forged ahead, reaffirming their unwavering dedication to advancing education through innovation and perseverance.
